There are many different types of yacht-tenders, of different lengths ranging from 4 mtrs up to 18 mtrs or even bigger. A typical Super-Yacht Tender can cost from 30.000 Euros for a small RIB, up to 1 millon Euros for a Limo-tender. Some of these tenders can reach up to speeds of 50 knots or more. As professional deck crew, you really need to know what you are doing when operating them.
The IYM Yacht-Tender Crew 15m™ Certification is a specially written course for professional crew operating tenders from a Superyacht. Unlike many other courses that can be found, this course is not a recreational based course. The syllabus is based upon operating practices found onboard a Superyacht. The Society has defined the operational limits in relation to the Superyacht being either privately or commercially registered.
The Certification enables the crew to operate a tender from the all-important commercial aspect covering the requirements of carrying charter guests and crew, whether it be day or night in moderate conditions.
The course consists of three parts;
i. Classroom theory course.
ii. Practical on-board course & exercises -day time.
iii. Practical on-board course & exercises -night time.
The course is ideal if you are new crew joining the yachting industry with some boating experience or if you are existing professional crew.
Within the the course, it features the basics of the Col.Regs in relation to small boat practices and manages to keep a reference to the rule numbers which for watchkeeping later-on, is great.
Navigation lights are covered in relative detail to enable safe operations in periods of darkness. The navigation concentrates upon position awareness and position approximation. Interaction between the plotter and the small craft edition charts and pilot books are also highlighted.
The all-important slow-speed boat handling is covered in-depth to build-up your confidence levels for driving the tender in crowded harbours. High speed boat handling is important to practise, including creating such things as visual clearing marks, turn radiuses, etc. There are two MOB’s that are covered, the Andersen and the Williamson: The Andersen turn is used for recovery of wake-boarders, skiers etc. An introduction to engine and propulsion units is featured, including the alarms for over-heating, oil pressure etc (important to understand when speaking to the engineers) Tender recovery procedures are within the syllabus with different types of launching mechanisms.
The IYM Yacht-Tender Crew 15m™ course has been developed over many years of teaching professional deck crew. The Certification looks great, with its leather holder wallet size, and can be carried in a pocket. Another practical aspect to the Certification, that it shows your pasport photo, your passport number and some other personal details that enable it to be used as a secondary ID if required.
Key features to consider:
- The Certification can be used for tender driving at night.
- The written and practical tests are straight forward non-academic. Your spoken English has to be of a good level, your written English can be at an average level.
- The qualifying sea-time is gained during the course itself.
- The Certification can be used to drive different types of tenders, with different engines and propulsions.
The diagram below shows the documents required for the Certification.

The IYM Yacht-Tender Crew 15m™ course is one of most complete courses you will find, you will learn a lot from it as well as enjoy the course.
What is this?
Our Society, the International Yacht Master Certification Society (IYM) operates its entire operations under a Quality Management System (QMS) that is in compliance with the International Standards Organisation (ISO) 9001:2015 amended. Part of this compliance involves full auditing procedures.
This is an important reference and enables us to gain recognitions from maritime admininstrations and marine industry bodies alike. Our Society is ISO 9001:2015 certified by the British Standards Institute (BSI) United State. The QMS together with the ISO, ensures that IYM and its Members operate to the highest standards possible. All our courses, and more importantly the Certifications that we issue, are under ISO 9001:2015.
This practise is most unusual for such courses and certifications. Some organisations will claim ISO:9001 adherence but often the reality is it is for a document management process or a similar back-office process instead of for actual operations and/or for Certification issuing.
